Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about the daily face remix, how scoring works, and why some players might be missing from the pool.

I can't find a specific player in the search list. Why?

We only include well-known players in the pool right now, so very young academy graduates, lower-league players, and recently retired names will be missing. New players are added every day, so check back regularly — your favourite may show up soon.

If you genuinely think a popular player is missing, let us know via the newsletter signup in the footer and we'll prioritise adding them.

How is the remixed face created?

Each daily challenge blends the faces of 2, 3, or 4 real footballers into a single fictional portrait. The remix borrows recognisable traits (eyes, nose, jawline, hairline, skin tone) from each source player so every one of them leaves a visible clue. The split-coloured jersey is another hint — each panel reflects one of the source players' club colours.

When does a new puzzle appear?

A fresh 2-, 3-, and 4-player remix is published every day at 00:00 UTC. Your timer, guesses, and hints reset at the same moment. If you're playing late at night in your timezone, the puzzle may change while you're still on the page — refresh to pick up the new one.

What's the difference between 2-, 3-, and 4-player modes?

The number is how many real footballers were blended into today's face. 2-player mode is the easiest — only two identities to untangle. 4-player is the prestige play: more clues are crammed into one face, so each individual trait is harder to read. Each mode has its own leaderboard.

How do the hints work?

A new hint unlocks every 5 guesses, in this order: team, then nationality, then age, then position. You don't have to use them, and skipping hints keeps your leaderboard score higher — hints used is a tiebreaker after total guesses.

How is the leaderboard ranked?

The daily leaderboard sorts by guesses first (fewer is better), then hints used (fewer is better), and finally solve time (faster is better). Each mode has its own leaderboard and its own daily date. You'll see the standings on the leaderboard page.

Do I need an account to play?

No — you can play and solve without signing in. To appear on the leaderboard or save your history across devices, pick a nickname or sign in via the button in the top-right of the header.

Can I replay older puzzles?

Yes. The archive page shows past challenges, including the remixes you played and the players hidden in them. Replays don't change the live leaderboard — the ranking each day only counts solves submitted that same day.

My guess shows “Already guessed”. What does that mean?

Each player can only be guessed once per puzzle. If you try the same name twice (or two spellings that resolve to the same player) the second one is rejected, so it doesn't pad your guess count.

I refreshed the page mid-game. Did I lose my progress?

No. Your guesses, found players, and revealed hints are stored in a cookie tied to today's puzzle, so refreshing the page (or coming back later in the day) picks up exactly where you left off. Progress only clears when the next daily remix rolls over at 00:00 UTC.

Why does my friend and I see the same daily puzzle?

That's by design — Remix XI is daily, so everyone gets the same 2-, 3-, and 4-player remix on the same date. Same puzzle, same rules, same leaderboard. Compare guesses and times afterwards.
